Quarantaine trend: de #MetGalaChallenge verovert Instagram

Door het coronavirus zal er helaas dit jaar geen Met Gala plaatsvinden. Spijtig, want dit modespektakel is ongetwijfeld hét evenement van het jaar wat betreft de meest opvallende fashionlooks. Toch wil Porter deze dag niet zomaar voorbij laten gaan … In plaats hiervan, lanceerde de acteur een nieuwe challenge, de #MetGalaChallenge.

Met Gala: de Super Bowl of Fashion

Het Met Gala wordt elk jaar in mei georganiseerd door de Amerikaanse Vogue in samenwerking met The Costume Institute van het Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Oorspronkelijk werd het georganiseerd ter ondersteuning van het mode-instituut, maar het werd al snel een groots modespektakel. Voor iedere modeliefhebber, een ware streling voor het oog.

The 2020 Met Gala theme has been revealed – ‘About Time: Fashion and Duration’ This will mark the Met’s 150th anniversary, and will be partly inspired by Virginia Woolf and the theories of the early-20th-century French philosopher Henri Bergson. The exhibition will feature 160 pieces of women’s clothing from the past 150 years. #metgala

#MetGalaChallenge

Het idee is simpel: creëer een iconische ‘Met Gala-look’ met alles wat je thuis kan vinden. Het resultaat is tot nu toe verbluffend … Vele Instagrammers lieten de afgelopen dagen hun creativiteit de volle loop. Zo werden er jurken nagemaakt met krantenpapier of werd er een jurk ontworpen met een doos stiften.

With this year’s annual #MetGala (normally held on the First Monday in May) postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are mourning what is typically one of the glitziest red carpet events of the year. The star-studded affair was supposed to be held on May 4 this year and in the past, it has produced some iconic red carpet looks. For those still craving the glamour and extravagance that usually comes with the night, however, we are teaming up with @theebillyporter on a new Instagram challenge that pays tribute to the night’s peacocking spirit: Meet the #MetGalaChallenge. The task is simple: recreate your favorite red carpet look from a past #MetGala at home. Which ensemble you replicate, and what you use to make it, is entirely up to you—think outside of the box! The Met Gala came a week early this year thanks to @voguemagazine & @theebillyporter ‘s #metgalachallenge 🎩 Although the 2020 Met Gala was originally scheduled for May 4th, the glamor will go on by paying tribute/recreating iconic looks from the past. While deciding on looks to put together for this challenge, I determined this year’s Gala theme would be NAPTIME NOIR, as all red carpet replicas were made with sleep essentials. 💤✨ Look 1️⃣: Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger (2017) – I used a sleeping bag, Goodwill blazer, belt, hosiery, and Marc Defang shoes to recreate this look. Look 2️⃣: Elizabeth Debicki in Salvatore Ferragamo (2019) – I used a bed sheet for the dress and the matching fitted sheet over a wire hanger to recreate the bow. The dish gloves really pull the look together. Look 3️⃣: Blake Lively in Chanel (2011) – The wrap of the lower dress was recreated with a throw blanket. Securing aluminum foil to a nude undershirt with double sided tape has never felt more like a ‘sign of the times.’

I was intimidated at first to try to craft the look with only supplies I had at home but then @kidd.ashleyb pointed out I could just use leaves. Supplies/ pants and shirt I had already, shoes I had already, dress cape is my bed sheet, a pillow case, and three bent wire hangers plus two safety pins.
